- History - The Multimedia Workshop
-
- In December 1990, I released my first major shareware
- product, Bicycle Tune-up & Repair, a pictures & text
- tutorial. To create it, I made my own drawing program. I
- also wrote my own runtime program to display the pictures, so
- that end users could move forward, backward or search for
- anything within the presentation. I had tried to use other,
- ready made drawing programs to put this together, but could
- not find anything that did what I wanted.
- This bicycle presentation was done in CGA monochrome
- graphics. In it I mentioned that I was thinking about
- doctoring up my home-made software so that others could use
- it to create their own presentations. I also mentioned that
- the price would probably be around $100. Checks for this
- vaporware product started coming in!
- So, of course, I finished it, wrote instruction files, and
- called this first monochrome, text and drawing program
- BLACKBOARD. It had no .PCX or .GIF import capability, no
- (true) color support, no sound effects, and no hyperlinking.
- Then I made a VGA version, and shortly after that came a
- version which would work in various video modes from CGA
- through VGA. This was renamed Another Program.
- After several major improvements, I made a new version
- with a new name: The Multimedia Workshop. TMW started with
- version 3.00, since it was built on two preceding products,
- or "generations". After version 5.00 ("Fifth Generation"), I
- started yet another major rebuild, adding several more
- features, much greater smoothness and speed and renamed it
- yet again to Media Magic.
- Media Magic's development has been continuing, but a
- consolidated product with a shareware version was required.
- Media Magic, a close cousin to TMW, is currently at version
- 9.84. Every minor or major change has caused the version
- number to increment by one hundredth.
- And, so to answer all those who asked, "Whatever happened
- to The Multimedia Workshop?" here's version 10 - the Tenth
- Generation, now once again available as shareware!
